God Reveals Himself to Us

God Reveals Himself to Us

in Tradition & Scripture (the Bible).

These 2 together make up a single deposit of faith.

Tradition is what Christ entrusted to the apostles that was handed on to others both orally (by mouth) & in writing.

Thus, 'Tradition' is the beliefs & practices of the Catholic Church that are passed down from one generation to the next under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

The Bible is the collection of 73 books containing the truths of God’s Revelation to us.

These writings were inspired by the Holy Spirit & written by human beings.

What is the Bible?

How Did It Come to Be the Collection of Books in Our Catholic Bible ?

Here's a brief story of what the Bible is:

With all the writings floating around the ancient world, who decided which of them rated as sacred enough to be scripture?

The early Catholic Church, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, determined which books there were to be viewed as authoritative, and thus were 'canon', that is, books to be included in the Bible.

This occurred in 382 A.D., and was reconfirmed in 405 A.D.

The Bible has officially had 73 books from that time to present day: for almost 2000 years.

In 1517 A.D., Martin Luther removed 7 books from the OT during the Protestant Reformation, so the Protestant Bible has only 66 books today.

The Bible Has Styles -- Literary Styles

Questions to Ponder

1. What are the literary styles used in the bible?

2. Why is it important to understand that the Bible has different literary styles?

How to Read the Bible

As St. Augustine said:

'The New Testament lies hidden in the Old, and the Old Testament is unveiled in the New.

That's called typology.

You can pray using the Bible, reading it slowly, and thinking about what it says & means in your life.

This type of prayer is called 'Lectio Divina'.

Do you know the order of the types of books in the NT?

They are:

4 Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John

Acts of the Apostles

Epistles by Paul

Other Epistles

Book of Revelation
